Missing

Last seen alive: February 09, 2010 at 14:26

Circumstances: NOTE: Partial remains have been recovered and positively identified as being those of Gregory Forte.

Pending the recovery of additional remains, this case shall remain a missing persons investigation.

Gregory R. Forte, 29, of Selbyville, was last seen around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday February 9, 2010 at a small gathering of friends in a condominium on South Carolina Ave. in Fenwick. He left during blizzard conditions; strong winds, a mix of rain, snow and sleet.

When Forte failed to return home on Wednesday, family and friends became concerned and went to the area where he was last seen. They found his vehicle, a gray Jeep Cherokee, parked in a covered condominium parking lot with keys in the ignition, door open and radio playing. His cell phone was found with a dead battery.

Forte’s sweatshirt and cell phone were both reportedly wet and found in the car. The cell phone battery was dead. In addition, his glasses he was wearing at the time of his disappearance were found in the vehicle. Forte’s black baseball cap was found on the east side of a beach road near a dune to the entrance to the beach.

One pair of Forte’s shoes as well as his jacket were discovered the following morning. It has not been confirmed if Forte was wearing shoes when he left the house, but those with him that night believe he had shoes on when he walked outside.

Blizzard conditions hampered the initial search; a massive search of the area including Fenwick Island, north Ocean City and areas north and west of Fenwick continued. Delaware law enforcement officials along with hundreds of Forte’s family and friends combed the area searching for him or any evidence of his whereabouts. A helicopter search of the entire area was conducted as public and private search teams went door-to-door in Fenwick and in north Ocean City. A team of dogs was taken through the Fenwick area; no evidence was uncovered.

Family members announced a $25,000 reward for information about Forte’s disappearance or his whereabouts. In addition, a fund in his name has been set up at the PNC Bank branch in Fenwick Island. The private search effort for Forte continues with an extensive flier campaign throughout Lower Delaware, Ocean City and even West Ocean City.

Missing man was to start job this week
http://www.delmarvanow.com
February 13, 2010
SELBYVILLE -- Greg Forte was supposed to be standing at the head of the class next week, sharing his knowledge and
passion with the students of Indian River High School. Instead, he has been the focus of a massive search effort, extending from Delaware Seashore State Park to north Ocean City.

'We just love him so much and want him to come home,' said his girlfriend, Kara Cunningham. 'We just need him back.' For much of the week, volunteers have been combing the beaches, following leads and posting flyers, all in hopes of finding the 29-year-old Selbyville man who disappeared Tuesday following a party at a Fenwick Island home. Emergency responders aided the effort by organizing the volunteers into manageable groups and monitoring the shoreline with the Delaware State Police helicopter.

Now, days after friends found his car with the door open and his possessions inside, those who knew him are keeping Greg Forte in their thoughts and prayers. 'He could make friends with anybody you could know,' said his brother, Jonathan Forte. 'He's such an outgoing guy;
everybody immediately likes him.' Greg Forte graduated from Indian River High School in 1998 and attended college at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Md. He recently earned his master's degree in secondary education from the University of Delaware. With dreams of teaching at his alma mater, he recently applied to become a full-time substitute. He was slated to start his new job this week, his family said.
'He's supposed to begin teaching soon,' Jonathan Forte said. 'He was excited to take over a class.'

While academics are important, Greg Forte's greatest love is soccer. He was a star player in high school and college, and organized local games in his spare time. 'He could talk to you for hours about sports,' said Jonathan Forte. 'He's a sports fanatic.' His mother, Linda Forte, said she knew something was wrong Wednesday when her son failed to call home. He was living with his parents at their Selbyville home at the time
of his disappearance.

'He is such a caring person,' she said. 'Greg is always checking on everyone else.' She said it has been touching to see how many people have offered to aid the search, braving frigid temperatures to find their friend and neighbor. 'Everyone has just been so kind,' she said.
