Circumstances: Michael Giovanni Cocchini, 23, a Nashville, Tenn., resident who had been staying in Gatlinburg, was last seen Sunday. The search for him got under way late Tuesday and intensified Wednesday in the northern section of the park near Gatlinburg.
Rangers began looking for Cocchini late Tuesday after noticing his vehicle had been parked since Sunday at a walkway along Newfound Gap Road about a mile south of the park’s Sugarlands Visitor Center, south of Gatlinburg. The walkway does not connect to the park’s trail system, so there would be no reason that backpackers would leave vehicles there overnight.
